I will definitely read the entire series. But there were many things in this book that fell short for me.

Plot: Chinese cultural aspects influencing the plot was a really nice concept. I was able to learn more about Chinese practices and politics.

Characters: Most characteristics in this book are scientists or have a science background. Hence, adhering to the stereotype, they have been portrayed as soulless beings who only “do” science. They have no personal aspirations and feelings. The only character having any personality at all is an inspector not from a science background. The scientists in this book were very one-dimensional. They could have been written better.

Science Writing: I am of a science background, but I still found it so difficult to understand the theories presented in this book. It might be a translation issue, which might improve in the upcoming books in this series. But for me, the explanations for simple topics were too simplified, and complex topics lacked clarity.

I found this a nice read! Loved the deep dives on scientific topics. However, this isn't for everyone. It can challenging. If you don't mind rereading/researching parts or you have some background in science this is a great read. Else the deep dives on the science topics may hinder.

I also found the book heavily plot driven and the mistery of it all was a bit lost because the backcover gives a lot away. It is more about the how instead of what. Also some parts came a bit out of the blue and did more 'tell' then 'show'.

A book full of interesting ideas and... not much else. With one exception, the characters are all pretty 2-dimensional and are mostly just mouthpieces for exposition.

I usually prefer faster pace books but I really enjoyed this one.

I really enjoyed
  • writing style
  • the tension and mystery

And learning more about
  • China's cultural revolution
  • Science concepts - a lot were explained well enough that I could understand without a science background

I never felt bored listening to this but some of the science parts went completely over my head and I didn't want to look them up out of fear of spoilers so I felt a bit lost during some of the super science heavy parts.

Spoilers:

Fyi it ends on a cliffhanger.

I love books that make me say wtf lol dried out people rolls?? What the fuck! Cutting a boat in half with a nano string?? Destroying microcosm societies??love it, absolutely loved the part at the end with the bug metaphor- The Bugs have never truly been defeated

I disliked this book a lot.  There was unnecessary gore.  There was not much characterization, so the reveal of one antagonist had no meaning.  There was only one woman who was a main character, the rest were side characters with no personality.  It was militantly pessimistic about human nature and society to the point where I wondered why I should root for the main characters at all.  The plot made little sense, and the book ended suddenly, like it just got cut off mid book rather than any plot points wrapping up.  I don’t know about astrophysics, but considering some basic details regarding glasses and eye health were not right, it made me a little bit question whether some of the more science things were right or not also.

the science can be quite difficult to read, but the imagination is exhilarating.
