This book is so important---what we say to our children about race and how important it is to say it with love and insight. I wish I could make everyone in the USA read this book with an openmind so that they could see and feel just how much love each parent has for his/her own children and how we are all the same in wishing the best for their futures.

I would rate this book at 4.5. And the only reason it is not a 5 is that I want more. Each story was a lesson for me. As a white, middle-class, woman, I have not experienced any of the issues that were brought up in these stories. I have not had to have "The Talk" with my white, middle-class, sons. This book encourages us to talk - talk about race. Talk about experiences. But more than that, it calls us all to action, to see the beauty in all people, and to do our part in stopping systemic racism and microaggressions.

"30 diverse authors and illustrators, 30 diverse conversations about systemic racism." This was beautiful and heart wrenching and encouraging. I will definitely be reading stories from here with my children.

Written as a series of stories or conversations (or poetry) from parents to their children, this powerful little book explores the causes, the effects, and the systemic nature of racism in a way that middle grade kids can understand. Reading this book together would be a wonderful way to introduce these kinds of conversations and issues to children. Highly recommended!

I'm an immigrant coming from a 99.3% white country. I knew about racial issues in America like you would know about a natural disaster happening somewhere across the world. I knew people were suffering but It never had any effect on my life personally. When I moved to America I realized that these issues are something people live and breathe every single day and I wanted to understand it because I only had the shallow basic knowledge.
I loved this book. It made me feel, cry and understand a sneak peak of someone else's reality. I especially loved "Our Inheritance" and "Why Are There Racist People?" because I never knew how things got to where they are right now. The most impactful one was "Ten". I cried after reading it. I was struck with horror that a simple interaction like that is a matter of life and death for some people and that they are forced to put on a performance while being scared of making a wrong move.

A must read for ALL parents and caregivers who want to learn more about the parent/caregiver lens of other communities.
