THIS is how u write a history book! Clearly written by someone who’s considerate & cautious & kind abt sharing other culture’s POV’s. God bless Grann & Scorsese for bringing this tragedy back to the forefront of the American psyche

4.5 stars rounded up to 5. This book is a masterpiece in writing non-fiction as fiction, and the third act of the book is haunting in a way that will stay with me for a while. I’m mainly glad that this book is coming into the national spotlight with Scorsese’s film, as the story of the Osage tribe is harrowing. Goes to show: man has been greedy and violent forever.

This is partly history and true crime. It tells the story of the Osage Nation who are hearded onto a rocky wasteland and given the rights to it. But when oil is discovered this sets in motion events that include exploitation and murder. The Osage are not treated as American citizens and indeed to some exploiters are seen as children at best and animals at worst . Though a well researched book, it is by the author's own admission barely scrapes the surface. Many more were exploited and murdered but have vanished into the disappearance of time and history. A well written and informative book.

The inhuman way that Americans treated the Indigenous peoples is beyond infuriating. Corruption at it's worst. the FBI is heinous.
