Like Daddy-long-legs, sweet story that punches above the time in which it was written, as the female lead grows into herself and becomes a woman that knows her own mind. Many have complained because of the overtone of eugenics, but I found it added to the story - not as an endorsement, but as a reflection of the time in which the book was written. Love how Sallie's letters change in tone depending on who she's writing to, it makes the story more dynamic than its predecessor.

I'm so happy that young women in 1912 had a strong, independed female character to look up to. One that choose her own fate and made her own path in life (and also got the guy!).
I enjoyed reading about how the frivolous Sally turned into a responsible and lovable caregiver. Her development wasn't linear but very satisfying nonetheless.
I liked reading about all the changes she brought on and the way she changed the miserable lives of the children. And I liked the doctor very much. Doctor+ Dilf+ Scottish+ emotionally unavailable grump- SAY LESS. I loved the development of Sally and Sandy's relationship as well. For how short the book was and how little their relationship was part of the plot I was amazed but how good their relationship developed. Just by a few lines and interactions here and there sprinkled throughout the book, I rooted for their relationship. And they talked??? About their feelings??? Openly??? And resolved their problems??? I just loved the ending. Sally staying with her asylum was the only correct ending for me.
However!! This is a feminist book written in a time women couldn't even vote but it unfortunately also falls victim to the time it was written in. With that I mean the dose of eugenics. With this book being written during the rise of eugenics and it including a doctor interested in mental health, it isnt very surprising it came up and it was very uncomfortable to read about. Sally writing about being "intrigued" about a manifesto thay suggests killing of all the mentally disabled and stupid people so they cant have children?? YIKES YIKES. I get that working with children that are (sometimes) a product of this can be hard, but stilllll

A nice fluffy read. You could see the ending a mile away, it was getting there that was fun. So long as you ignore the uncomfortable amount of praise for eugenics. Oh, early 1900s, you had no idea what you were in for...
