This was a super cute contemporary rom com featuring 2 characters with a WHOLE LOTTA baggage, mistaken identities, and falling in love via email. I had a lot of of fun with this and found myself smiling like a fool most of the book. I did have some issues with it—specifically, I think Lily forgave Nick way too quickly and I really wanted to see more growth from him.

Despite that, I am hooked into this series and can't wait to immediately start book 2.

The Neighbor Favor felt somewhat like Get A Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert but for me it was lacking the charm that Talia’s characters have. I mean… Chloe Brown and Lily Greene both have color last names, a “near death experience” in the first chapter, two sisters, a cat, and a male love interest that hasn’t healed from past trauma yet. If you prefer less spice and less sass, I’d go with The Neighbor Favor

I liked that our main characters were book nerds who were into contemporary high fantasy books. Too many book/movie protagonists are interested in only classics.

The email chain at the beginning of the book was fun. Probably my favorite part of the book. I also liked  the side characters Yolanda and Henry. I did like the cute cheesy epilogue, but for much of the book I felt bored.

I loved the emails, the family and found family relationships, all of the book talk, and the personal growth in this book. It felt similar to Talia Hibbert's Brown sister books but with a bit less steam. I'll definitely read more from this author and series.

Books like this restore my faith in booktok recommendations after being bamboozled by too many authors on the platform. It was so charming and easy to love both lead characters. It’d be a perfect romcom if Hollywood could take a break from rehashing every superhero story ever made.

Lily is an editorial assistant who writes an email to a hidden gem of an author, who starts writing her back. Months of correspondence- sharing every corner of their hearts with one another- comes to a sudden end when Strick aka Nick starts to panic about revealing too much of himself. When the two end up living in the same building and Nick realizes Lily is his Lily, it’s only a matter of time until secrets get spilled.

I don’t normally love the trope where one half of a couple knows a huge secret and we all know things are going to break bad once the secret is revealed but I didn’t mind it in this case. Both Lily and Nick captured my heart so fully that I’ll forgive all their faults. The only real issue I have with this book is how long the email sequence is at the beginning. It’s important to see how deep both characters were in their relationship but it kept going on and on. I think I would’ve enjoyed it more if it had been broken into smaller chunks and sprinkled throughout the book.

Content warnings:
Sexual content (on page):
Lily and Nick do have sex and it is explicit. Both scenes are relatively short and they end up feeling a little out of place because it takes so long to get there. They’re easy to skip if you’re not into any spice at all but this is barely one pepper.

Addiction, alcohol (off page):
Nick’s dad is a gambling addict who makes a slew of bad choices. This actually occurs off page but learning to cope with his feelings about his dad is a big part of Nick’s arc.

Infidelity (off page):
Lily’s future brother in law is discovered 2 weeks  before the wedding to have been cheating on her sister for months. Violet throws an anti-wedding party instead.

Child abuse (on/off page):
Nick’s father financially abuses him throughout his life. We specifically see a flashback of his dad taking him out of school to be a lookout for him while he breaks into someone’s home to steal money from them. During their getaway, Nick tries and injures himself and is scarred from the fall.

Car accident (off page):
Nick’s dad gets in an accident near the end of the book and is hospitalized. Nick visits him and finally tells his parents about his book.

The miscommunication was the big thing about this book that was frustrating. I loved watching both characters grow throughout the book and the setting was great! I loved the bookstore dates and book references.

This was cute, but ultimately the secret identity plot did not work for me. I think You’ve Got Mail retellings can work for me if both characters find out the truth around the same time, but when one character knows and lies about it, I just can’t. I don’t care how sad your backstory is, don’t wait months to tell people who you really are, especially if you’re going to go around kissing them!! The main characters were quite lovely and sweet outside of that plot though. I loved that they connected over books.

My main bugbear: I am so tired of side characters trying to push the main character(s) into dating and setting them up when they don’t want to be. STOP FORCING PEOPLE YOU SUPPOSEDLY LOVE INTO DOING STUFF THEY DON’T WANT TO AND LISTEN WHEN THEY TELL YOU TO STOP IT. It really pisses me off and puts me off ever wanting to read books about those characters (in this case, Lily’s sisters) when it makes the protagonist so miserable and reduced to desperate measures to get them to stop. She does stand up to them in the end, and I get that it's a plot device, but that doesn’t prevent the rage building every time I encounter it on page.

It did amuse me that Nick’s fake English accent was written more accurately and convincingly than most American authors write supposedly real ones lol.

I enjoyed part 1 of this where they were writing emails to each other a lot more than the latter half of the book. I can’t quite put my finger on why, because I liked the story but the pacing was a bit off and by the end it felt I was being told things rather than shown.

Sweet introverted heroine and tortured hero - I really am not a fan of the ‘I don’t deserve you so I will push you away’ trope so I didn’t love that element. It was a fun read though!
