Read for Popsugar: a science fiction novel
I have vague memories of reading 1984, but I could definitely see the influences of this earlier dystopian novel. I read the newest translation - not sure how it would compare to the older versions, but I found it a tiny bit hard to follow at times, but overall really interesting. D-503's journey from unquestioning builder to finding his soul and becoming a sabotage agent and then back again (and better than before) is both fascinating and discouraging.

Loved it. It's really an underrated classic. It made me question my own thoughts and logic and really shifted how I see happiness. It has a lot of great quotes. I do have to say that it was hard to understand what was really going on at some points because i have a hard time reading between the lines but the story is very well written and the imagery super interesting for a book from that time

Zamaytin’s “We” has a lot of interesting things to say about authoritarianism and totalitarianism, relating particularly to the High Modernist vision described by authors such as James S Scott and elaborated on by Orwell and Huxley. However, it is wrapped in some of the most boring prose and writing I have read and really slow down in the middle to an absolute crawl that left me tempted to dnf this book. I think this book well debates the idea of freedom vs happiness, a debate quite relevant to Singapore and similar states. Zamaytin’s use of mathematics is really compelling and is very well-used — a beacon of light in an otherwise drab set of words.

The further away from this book I get, the more I appreciate it. It also somehow added more depth to a movie created 100 years after its publishing (The Platform 2) that I initially did not care for.
