Someday, I would love to read this book in the original Russian. I remember finding it so vividly human - even porous (to borrow an idea from Bradbury) when I first read it in my 20's. Upon this reread (of a different translation) I will say that this translation does an outstanding job of capturing the self-awakening of a mathematic-philosopher. It also beautifully allows the audience to share the narrator's confusion at considering the possibility of a truth radically different from that he has always taken as a given.

As the translator points out, to frame this story as merely an inspiration or predecessor of Orwell's more famous book does the depth of human insight it offers a terrible disservice. If you must, read this as a way to repay the creative debt Orwell clearly owed but didn't acknowledge, but bear in mind that it offers much, much more.

Reviewing this specific edition! Margaret Atwood’s introduction contained numerous spoilers that were not signaled or forewarned. Incredibly frustrating.

Historically important

The story that inspired a great many others (such as Brave New World, 1984 and Player Piano)! It’s a little tricky to follow in points, but well worth the struggle.

It’s interesting to see the beginning of the dystopian genre and looking at home much has changed and what has stayed the same. We was much more approachable than I expected from a Russian translated dystopian novel from a literal century ago and I really enjoyed it.

Interesting dystopian novel, but it felt like something I would have read in AP Lit.
