Written in the late 70s but so much is still so relevant.
Although my story is very different to hers I could relate to quite a bit. Well written although short.

Wish i had read this when my mom first got her diagnosis. Reflecting on how much non-white women are pushed to handle so much without leaning on one another. Thinking about how to allow community, family friends strangers with similar experiences, show up for you.
A slim volume recommended by my feminist daughter. Much food for thought. Sadly, still very relevant.

This book struck me over and over again. Her experiences with fear, grief, loss, pain, silence...and redemption, strength, fighting, and empowerment were utterly moving. I saw my mother in this book, I saw myself in this book, I saw my Sisters and fellow Women in this book.
The Cancer Journals delves intimately into Lorde’s experience with breast cancer, also revealing how misogyny manages to infiltrate even surgery and mastectomy, for “Women have been programmed to view our bodies only in terms of how they look and feel to others, rather than how they feel to ourselves, and how we wish to yaw them. We are surrounded by media images portraying women as essentially decorative machines of consumer function, constantly doing battle with rampant decay (57).”
Deeper than I expected. There's still the political leanings of 1980 (personal as political), but there's also something deeper -- the spiritual, the ability to dissipate fear by exposing it, the power of our hearts, relationships and community -- that's very meaningful to me.
