I wish I could commit this entire book to memory. Audre Lorde writes so precisely yet beautifully, I can't get over how economic yet perfectly descriptive her work is. A must-read for anyone going through chronic or terminal illness, especially one that may involve or already has involved surgery. This will especially resonate if you have at least one marginalized identity or the outcome of your surgery is externally visible to other people.

I read this shortly after returning from the hospital following a medical emergency, and her description of the experience of hospitalization was uncanny. I cried several times reading this because I felt so seen, and I cried, too, because not much has changed since she wrote this in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
