I read this because I had seen it quoted in numerous disability theory books. It didn’t disappoint. Beautiful prose and inward looking - and it brings self care away from capitalism and against it. We shouldn’t focus on being ‘happy’ whilst our environment is being systematically destroyed. A good read but sad how poignant and unchanged/worsened the issues that Lorde discusses are 45 years later
Ever since I read a whole book by Audre Lorde, I’ve been a fan. Sure, excerpts are nice, but the whole thing is better. So, throughout the years I’ve been picking up something by her every now and then – Sister Outsider is a great (re-)read. And this time I was curious how she would write about the topic of (breast) cancer and in the particular period of time. And once again, she delivers. It’s an excellent book and packs a punch with her insight and wits.
As a man, I can’t put myself in her position, but I commend her for her honesty and clarity as she wrote well about the situation she was in. Thus, I fully agree with Alice Walker who recommends to every woman to read it and I might go even further to say everyone in general.

the motion to reach for this book after my own cancer diagnosis was automatic. and as she always does, audre lorde so lyrically reflected my own feelings back to me. this book gave me permission to feel the difficult emotions i was masking for the sake of others, and to find light and POWER in facing the reality of our own mortality head on. essential reading, period.

Excellent. Finished this right in time (aka the second the doorbell rang and the first person arrived to discuss it for our little autotheory group) and sort of wished I'd read it in one big sitting. So much packed into like 70 pages. Lorde is maybe better at communicating big ideas in profound yet incredibly understandable ways than any other writer I've come across. It's poetic and political and beautiful and still so clear!! Lucid is perhaps the word. Riding the Lorde train and reading Zami next
“What depraved monster could possibly be always happy?”
