That feeling in my chest . . . I was in love with him. And he was going back to Afghanistan tomorrow.

If you're going to read this book, have thirty boxes of tissues on deck at all times. Seriously. I do not even know what to say right now. I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up as the best book I read in all of 2024. Nate was all, "Touch her and die," and I was here for itttttttt. Nate's dog tag necklace? I am not okay. Fuck. I also felt for Izzy on a personal level and felt seen, as I know how difficult it can be loving someone engaged in a dangerous profession. 🥺 Finally, you're telling me Fourth Wing's kingdom of Navarre is a nod to Nate's call sign? OMFG. I'm done. 🫠 So many emotions, not enough pages. 😭

Side note: An epilogue where they don't have a child?!?! NO WAY!!! Yarros, you've done it! I'm your superfan!

“He put his arms out and turned slowly, but I didn’t savor the sight of his bare back and torso like I had just a few minutes ago. Now I saw every place he could be hurt. Every vulnerable inch.”

“He wasn’t mine. I wasn’t his. That was the agreement we’d made. And yet he was always mine. I was always his.”

“‘I’m realizing that it doesn’t matter who I date. They’re all just placeholders because I’m waiting for you. Waiting for us.’”

Best moments: Izzy and Nathaniel have a great
connection and their spicy scenes were great!

Worst moments: all the flash backs and flash
forwards made it a bit annoying to keep up with
listening:

Overall, I like the premise. My own relationship is
similar in that we were together and the timing
sucked until later in life, so I related,

Absolutely DEVOURED this book in less than 24 hours. Could not put it down, save for the incredibly emotional moment that had me flinging the book across the table. The MMC and FMC are beautifully, heartbreakingly written. This love story is absolutely epic and worth every heart pounding second.

Only thing preventing 5 stars is a slightly white-savior tone to the war in Afghanistan.

I was completely invested in Nate & Izzy’s story from the very first page + devoured every word. This was an emotional, addictive, pacy romance with the very slowest of slow burns, tension and an intense + perfectly crafted plot. I related so much to Izzy and her incessant babbling, whether she was nervous or not and I loved that Nate was a reader🥹 The only element that stopped this being a five star read was the missed chances/miscommunication trope (I KNOW this was the whole point of the story) but it’s not my fave!

Meh

Yarros’ strength is world building- which she fails to do here. The problem is she THINKS character romance and relationships is what makes her books good. It isn’t. Still a decent writer but pass on this one!

A couple spoilers —-

This was so so so good, surprisingly so.  I really didn’t know how I would feel about it. The military terminology and persona she gave Nate gave a little bit of army wife vibes, but I just had to remind myself Rebecca herself was never in, only her husband and her family members were, so she was writing off of references and stories. I tried not to focus on that but to focus on the point, which is Rebecca’s bread and butter - the ROMANCE! Nate and Izzy’s story was so real - life complicates love a lot and when you truly love someone, you never want to ask them to give up dreams and ambitions for you. That really resonated with me!

I gave it 4.5 stars because Rebecca - PLEASE. No one is having sex in war zones. Learn from SJM’s MISTAKES. It gives “ick” and takes away from the point of the sub plot you had going on, the WAR in Afghanistan 🤦🏻‍♀️

Also the plot twist with TORRES??!!?? HOW DID I MISS THAT??? As soon as the name tag was given to her, I literally had to take a pause like “ NOW THIS ALL MAKES SENSE!” I almost thought when it was randomly emphasized they were going to have sex without a condom that Nate would die and Izzy would be pregnant lol but no. Rebecca found a different way to break my heart 😭
