That feeling in my chest . . . I was in love with him. And he was going back to Afghanistan tomorrow.

If you're going to read this book, have thirty boxes of tissues on deck at all times. Seriously. I do not even know what to say right now. I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up as the best book I read in all of 2024. Nate was all, "Touch her and die," and I was here for itttttttt. Nate's dog tag necklace? I am not okay. Fuck. I also felt for Izzy on a personal level and felt seen, as I know how difficult it can be loving someone engaged in a dangerous profession. 🥺 Finally, you're telling me Fourth Wing's kingdom of Navarre is a nod to Nate's call sign? OMFG. I'm done. 🫠 So many emotions, not enough pages. 😭

Side note: An epilogue where they don't have a child?!?! NO WAY!!! Yarros, you've done it! I'm your superfan!

“He put his arms out and turned slowly, but I didn’t savor the sight of his bare back and torso like I had just a few minutes ago. Now I saw every place he could be hurt. Every vulnerable inch.”

“He wasn’t mine. I wasn’t his. That was the agreement we’d made. And yet he was always mine. I was always his.”

“‘I’m realizing that it doesn’t matter who I date. They’re all just placeholders because I’m waiting for you. Waiting for us.’”

I went into this not knowing what to expect and a little sceptical after loving Fourth Wing and Iron Flame so much. However the unexpected was the best surprise I could have asked for. I read the blurb and thought yeah not too bad but it was so much more than just the blurb.

Let me set the scene, 10 years ago you’re on a plane sat next to the best looking guy you’ve ever seen, but as you take off, the plane crashes and mr handsome literally saves you and pretends to be your husband so he can stay with you at the hospital. Hooked? Yeah me too. But when you wake up he’s gone to carry out his duty in the army. 3 years later you coincidentally bump into him and try to meet yearly all over the world for 1 week until you don’t. Fast forward 4 years again and you’ve landed in Afghanistan where he is assigned to protect you. What could possibly happen when you’re reunited with your “what if”?

I absolutely loved this book. Each chapter switched from present day to a different point throughout their 10 years which I loved. It gave the insight of their lives prior to why they act like they do at present. Nate is everything you want in a MMC; protective, strong, swoony, rugged and just such a book boyfriend. Izzy, is just Izzy. I didn’t dislike her at all but I wanted to scream so bad “Why would you let this man go?” But then the more I read the more I understood.

Overall, this was the perfect second chance but also first chance book. I wanted nothing but a happy ending for them both and loved every minute of reading this book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Tropes include:

I started reading Rebecca Yarros because of the fourth wing, but will continue to read Rebecca Yarros because of this book. It was a simple read, but I was easily wrapped up in the characters and the story line. The pace felt easy, and I usually have a hard time bouncing back and forth between characters and time periods, but i tracked with the change up easily in this book. Added bonus: super solid smut scenes with emotional elements.

This book was amazing! I normally have a harder time getting into a romance book but this one had me hooked from the second I started reading it. The premise is interesting and every chapter reveals a new puzzle piece in a beautiful love story. Also it’s giving enthusiastic consent.
At the same time it is raw and I had a couple of moments where I had to put the book down and think about the reality in which we live.
Would recommend but maybe not to everyone as there are quite some triggering moments described.

Just another Rebecca Yarros book that completely gutted me and made me cry….

I loved the immediate chemistry between Nate and Izzy. I loved that their story started with tragedy but ended with so much love. There are certainly aspects of this book that can trigger people and did bring up some emotions for me that I hadn’t expected so I encourage people to make sure to look at the trigger warnings before reading.
