A cat and mouse sort of quest with a healthy dollop of romance, this book was more enjoyable than I expected. Most characters were balanced with good and bad qualities, though I would have liked a more flawed love interest. Although the plot moves well, it took a while to adjust to the supernatural powers of each caste in the beginning because it assumed the reader would remember from the legend at the beginning (this would make an ebook version much more annoying since I could flip back easily to remind myself in the physical version).
I also appreciated the nonchalance of the involvement of gay, poly, and non-binary characters and their normalcy in that society, despite the primary romance being a cishet pairing with canoodling limited to a PG13-14A rating.

Enjoyable plot if predictable pieces... the narrator sounded like early versions of Siri though... very robotic. I'll probably read rather than listen to the next in the series, as I'm vaguely interested in what happens next. I like the magic in this one, though - more unique than I've seen. :)
