"Even Phoenixes need ashes to rise."

In The Merciful Crow, Fie and her Crows, the lowest caste who are called to remove the dead and dying in the kingdom, find themselves protecting the Crown Prince from a plot against his life. If they can only protect Prince Jasimir and get him to his allies, the Prince has vowed to improve the lives of all Crows once he becomes King. However, betrayal and forces darker than any of them have ever known meet them at every turn, and soon Fie, Jasimir, and his guard Tavin are left on their own to save themselves and the kingdom.

This was so good! It took me awhile to get into, but I think that's mostly because I'm in a bit of a slump. That being said, I really liked this world and its plot, even if the magic system is a little difficult to understand. It's unique, though, and that just about redeems it for me. Fie's ability to use the powers of dead members of the other castes via their bones was so much fun and totally my vibe.

It was also great to see a character's pronouns by "they" without anyone questioning it, and for characters to be bi, gay, and otherwise lgbtqa+ without anyone batting an eye, including main characters! Furthermore, at least to me, it seems obvious that this book is inspired by the systemic racism we still face in the world today. The crow caste = the black race. This feels extra poignant in the current moment, and I think it was handled well. For example, a government "trying so hard to pretend there isn't a problem usually means that they know there's a problem." The Crows express that anyone, including members of the Hawk caste (police-like), can do whatever they want to Crows with no consequences. This was great and so clearly and disgustingly unfair, that this could be a great tool in my opinion for explaining racism at the moment.

On a much less serious note, I also liked the romance, which is weird for me. I won't go into who gets romantic with whom because I don't want to spoil anything, but I'm actually feeling it! This is big!!!

Overall, I'm so interested to see how the romantic and familial relationships will develop and where the larger plot of reclaiming the throne from the evil queen (and super shady king) will go in the second book.
