Honestly, I kept thinking that I was getting close to the end, realizing I still had several hours left, then wondering what could possibly happen next. I loved all the characters, but this book cemented Rhy as my favorite.

The deaths in this book hurt. Most of them were noble sacrifices: Hastra (my love!!), the King, and Holland. Other were innocents: Calla and Anisa Emery. I was a bit surprised how many characters Schwab did decide to kill off, and I wish it had been fewer. I also didn’t like that so many of the citizens of London died trying to fight off the fog, while those who gave into it and were subsequently put to sleep were, for the most part, fine.

I was hoping for some sort of redemption for Holland, and I got it. I’m a sucker for self-sacrifice, so I loved that, ultimately, it came down to him to defeat the shadow king, sacrificing his magic (and then his life) in the process.

Ironicallly, my reviews for the books in the series keep going down whilst my enjoyment rises.

Overall Thoughts:
⁕ V.E. Schwab does not pull ANY punches with this one. It is a nail-biting, heart-wrenching, fast-paced read from start to finish. You will feel all the feelings while reading.

⁕ A decent portion of this is quest-centered — which I usually find very cringe — but Schwab does an AMAZING job keeping the stakes high and infusing it with character development. It never felt like a tedious journey from point a to point b, but rather an engaging and essential part of the entire series arc.

⁕ The ending is SO satisfying and stands well on its own. And YET, I cannot wait for Threads of Power to be released. I need more Kell and Lilah and I need them now 😂
