What is it about the YA Girl-solves-mystery-with-her-hot-but-troubled-love-interest trope that gives the reading community a raging boner (me included)?? I loved this book and it sounds typical but my favorite part was the last twist. I know the sole purpose of a mystery book isn't to be unpredictable but to entertain but I still love a good surprise!!! I'm a simple girl who's easily entertained.

Even after reading this for a second time the narrative never failed to keep me at the edge of my seat. I was inspired by the cast announcement and to say I’m excited is downplaying it to an extreme. I cannot wait to see Pip and Ravi in live action. Though I love this book my second read through gave me a couple more questions.
How was Mr. Ward so convinced the girl he was holding captive was Andie? He had no prior signs of mental illness yet he was so deluded he managed to convince himself entirely. Why didn’t Pip face repercussions for trespassing into the Bell’s home? Or did she leave that evidence out of her final report?

i think i wouldn't have kept reading this book if the mystery and plot weren't half-decent. the characters lack depth; they feel very one-dimensional to me, especially the main character. i will have to say though, there were some bits of the plot that felt very unrealistic and nonsensical.

another major thing that i didn't like: the romance between a 17 year old high school student and a 20 year old. the 20 year old even called her "a kid" twice, so he acknowledged the difference in maturity and power imbalance in their relationship.

while there are people of color in this book (one major one being the accused murderer), i'm quite hesitant to label it as diverse in representation because of how lacking it is. the characters of color only seem to be people of color in name. while i understand that it's hard for a white person to write about the experiences and cultures of people of color, it doesn't even seem like there was an attempt. as a person of color myself, i believe that our cultures shape our identities and are deeply ingrained in who we are.

I loved this book. I kept trying to guess what actually happened, only to be completely wrong. WOW
