This the first thing I've read from Jon Krakauer and MAN is it good.
History, drama, in-depth explanations of mountaineering, and incredibly colorful characters. I went into this trying to learn more about the Eiger and ended up reading about canyoneering, dirtbag twins, and paragliding off mountains.
Krakauer has a great and approachable voice, an eye for adventure, and writes super well. Was fully entertained and filled with wanderlust from the get-go. If you like adventure/outdoor sports, you would be doing yourself a disservice if you don't read this!
