I really enjoyed this one. I went back to re-read on my HR favorites binge and it holds up. It's the heroes, I think. I loved both Daphne and Anthony.
Daphne transforms into a very outspoken woman, after getting her heart broken by careless words. She stops hiding herself. And Anthony starts to take notice.
Now, my only qualm with the book is that I think its resolution was a bit fast. I would have preferred an epilogue as well.

I didn't know how I was going to feel going into this book. I've never actually enjoyed that Grease-like trope of a girl having to change for a boy to get his attention. This book had just been in a lot lists that included all my favorite Kleypas novels. I honestly couldn't see how it was possible to redeem this hero, but slowly he began to grow on me.
Her confidence boost may have been ignited by him, but she really came into her own without being sad and smitten over him past a couple pages. As his terrible plan to seduce her into staying at her job unraveled into him falling head over heels completely in love with her had me in all kinds of giggly. It was almost like watching him melt off the page. She didn't make it easy for him either. I definitely enjoyed watching his attempt to court her and enjoyed their very public interactions through the gift of flower arrangements. Maybe it's my very introductory knowledge of romance, but it felt very unique to me.
Overall, this book had some moments that really pulled on my weak heart strings, but I wished that ending resolution didn't feel so rushed. Or maybe I just wanted more!

so i have super mixed feelings about this book. at the start, i thought this could easily be a 4-5 star read. by the end, i was unsure. i liked the beginning and was excited for some groveling. i did enjoy the prose, and the way this was written felt historically accurate. i loved that the duke was challenged, could see daphne's fiery personality, and had a lot in common with her. the FMC had a lot of self-respect, and i loved that for her.
the latter half of this book took a turn for the worse. i think it's because the duke didn't redeem himself enough?? he tended to focus too much on her physical attributes. don't get me started on the glasses. the ENDING WAS super abrupt, and i think it would've benefitted with an epilogue (i say this as someone who tends to skip epilogues). what happens with the marriage? the excavations? how does the duke's sister react? what happens to the baron?
i read the last chapter, and i was like oh.. that's it? very sudden and kinda a letdown.

Anthony and Daphne's story is a true slow burn, but the flirting and the witty dialogue between the two MCs created the best kind of tension. Loved this book!
No one in the history of fiction dukedom has pulled the “i’m a duke” card more than this guy lmao. Enjoyable enough, but kinda slow at times.
Don't know why I didn't initially give a review, but I just finished a re-read, and really enjoyed it. Anthony is a dick at first, but man does he do some quality groveling. And I just love Daphne - she's got more self-respect and sense than most HR heroines, and she doesn't let him walk all over her. He has to earn his redemption.
My only sad quibble is that I wish there was an epilogue.
Anyway, I picked up this re-read because I saw someone reading a later book in the series, in my feed. And I couldn't remember why I didn't go on, given that I seemed to enjoy this one. Well ... the refresher let me know why - I wasn't thrilled with the intro to Dylan Moore in this book, and I don't think a book about a drug-addicted manwhore is a thing that would ever appeal to me. Bleh. Then in book 3, we get a second-chance (a book type that I nearly always hate) with a cheating douchebag husband. Nope. No thanks. No.
So I liked this one, but this is a series that is full of NOPE for me. I won't read onward.
