I really enjoyed this book up until the last 1/4. too much FBI/law enforcement/lawyer talk for my personal taste. that being said, it was a wild ass ride from start to finish and kept me hooked the whole time. I read this book with my girlfriend and found myself itching to read when she wasn't able to and wanting to read ahead. beware, this book is pretty graphic and violent for how popular it is, it surprised me.

I feel like I absolutely need to start this review off by giving a larger-than-life, HUGE TRIGGER WARNING for this book. I have never felt so haunted by a character’s actions. That being said, Karin Slaughter knows how to write a violent psychopath. She also pays a lot of attention to detail, which I can appreciate.
I also appreciate the way she kept the realism with Claire after she finds out what he’s done — the anger, the shock, but also the grieving of who she thought was her husband, and the wishing that it was all just a nightmare in her head.
Only thing I didn’t enjoy was that I didn’t feel like I could relate to any of the characters; it felt like they were either too vapid for my taste or just aren’t relatable to me, but that’s ok!

Absolutely gut wrenching story. Heartbreaking and mysterious that made me have to know what happened next. It’s heavy so take the time to process it and take care of your mental health but for those who love dark gory thrillers, it is perfect.

The events narrated are violent and disturbing, with multiple trigger warnings (violence, sexual assault, murder, addiction, corruption, kidnapping…).

The book is well-written and well-structured, featuring an effective plot twist. However, I found it repetitive at times, particularly in detailing characters’ personal traits and emotions, as well as certain parts of the story. Despite this, the author successfully maintains tension throughout the book, and the plot proves solid enough to surpass predictability.

My reading experience started off really strong and then took a steep dive off a cliff. There were some twists early on that really had me intrigued but then the twists stopped coming and it just became an overly-detailed drag. This book could have been A LOT shorter.

I knew almost nothing about the storyline going into it except that it was going to be extremely depraved and dark. And it was! But it felt… pointless. Like it was just there for shock value and nothing more. Like, why? TELL ME WHYYYY.

I will say the best part about this book was the father. I’ll leave it at that.

Very dark, but fast paced. Relatively predictable.

I can’t decide how to rate this book. It includes some of the most disgusting and depraved ways a person can possibly think. It’s so dark. I didn’t realize how awful it was going to be until it was too late. The only reason I was able to keep reading was because the two women at the center were worthy of rooting for. Ultimately, it’s a four instead of a five for me because there were parts that were too unbelievable and too sadistic, and I don’t ever want to be mistaken as condoning violence against women for any reason.
