Soren is swoony

This is a fake relationship book that turned not fake almost right from the start.

I do not love nor hate the fake dating trope but I do think that the reasons for faking the relationship are usually stupid or shallow. Pretending to be in a serious relationship so the parents would think he's not going wild while in college? Hmmm... flimsy, but I'll take it.

I loved Soren. Such a solid guy. His flirty lines in the beginning got to me too so I don't fault Vi for giving in. He was protective of Vi from the start, he respected her, and I love that he didn't do anything stupid when he realized he was feeling more for her.

I honestly thought there was going to be some stupid third act breakup but the good news is there wasn't. Both characters were very levelheaded and I love that kind of maturity.

Soren: “What would it take to win the top spot?”

Vi: "It would take every day. Choosing me, every day, as the most important thing in your life, but you’re not interested in that.”

Will reread in the future? Probably.

Do I recommend? Definitely.

cute!

It’s was a good one! Medium on the smut but it’s there, and of course everything has to come with drama but really a cute story. No dark though which it so could have gone- but that’s just my preferences coming in so if looking for a dark romance this one doesn’t go evil, mean at times for sure with judgmental families, well there has to be that with football come on! Still good!
lighthearted fast-paced

After an encounter with a football player at a frat party, Vi now has a target on her back. Soren, star football player, was called in to help Vi escape the party and now finds himself offering her a proposition they can both benefit from - pose as his fake girlfriend to help his reputation and she'll have a place to stay without asking her family for help. Soren soon finds himself breaking his one rule - do not get emotionally attached - while Vi starts to see beyond his jock persona.

Honestly, this book was all about the vibes for me. There was the perfect amount of drama and the resolutions were well done without annoying miscommunications. I really loved all the characters, especially the chemistry between Vi and Soren. This is definitely a universe I want to keep reading about.

🏈 Sports romance
🏈 Fake dating
🏈 Spicy 🌶🌶

This book definitely had more potential than what it gave. I felt like I was missing so much side story info between other characters and stuff that happened in the past. Idk if there's a series before this that ties in or smth? The fmc wasn't my fave at all. I did like Soren. He was pretty open and honest about what he wanted, his past, and who he is. Vi tho kept secrets that were completely unnecessary and felt like manufactured conflict. She held herself back from a real relationship with Soren for what reason?? I never had a clear picture of that outside of vague "don't want to get hurt" stuff. Between that and feeling confused about events discussed this isn't above a 3 for me. Soren really pulled a lot of weight in this.

Nikki Hall is a brilliant storyteller, and I wanted more from her first novel in the Wild card series. This is an excellent start to the series. Vi and Soren are a good match in the sense that opposites attract, but they also are not complete opposites. This book is highly recommended for me, with a 4.75 rating, and I will surely read it again. For romance fans who enjoy the clichés of faking dating, forced proximity, college football, and romance, this author and series is worth checking out! I’m definitely picking up story two of this series and hope we get to see more of Vi and Soren even just as background characters!

Very confused by the motivations in the twist but oh well not everything needs to make sense in a superficial romance.
