When I first picked up this book days after my dad died, I hated it. I was looking for some hope and understanding, and this book will not give you that. It won’t because it is a frank and honest portrayal of grief. Over a year later, I picked it up again and loved it. I was then ready to see my experience reflected back to me, and appreciate someone not glossing over grief with cliches and happy endings.

I think this subject would have been better served by a long-form essay. Book-length was a little much. Also, don't read this while your husband is away on business or you'll give yourself a complex.
I do enjoy Didion's writing.
