Iron Flame pulled me right back into Basgiath from page one, and by the end I was crying all over again. The middle (40–80%) dragged a bit with some choppy pacing and editing errors, so I’m giving it 3.75, but the finale completely redeemed it. Tairn and Andarna still own my heart (truly the stars of this series), and the Fourth Wing squad continues to be my favorite friend group in fantasy right now. Violet and Xaden? I love them, but I was craving a little more angst and slow-burn longing instead of constant intensity. Maybe that’ll come later… and if it does, I’ll be first in line with tissues and snacks, ready to suffer happily.

If you notice below, I tried reading this once already and couldn't get through it. This time, I did. And I survived, although if I had edited this book, I would have cut out about 150 pages in the middle. The action in the last part is the most exciting, and the angst between Violet and Xaden still drove me nuts. The whole "I love him, but I don't trust him" angle doesn't work when he keeps saving your life, Violet. Will I attempt the third book? I feel like I should as a librarian, but we'll see.

The older I get, the more I can't read fantasy series titles. There are so many other good books out there that I'd rather read. I read about half of this, and it was just fine, but I can only take so much sexual angst and "everyone is out to kill me" before I look longingly at the other books on my shelf. And so I quit reading and moved onto something else. Don't get me wrong, I still liked this book and I understand why they are so popular, but I wanted to move onto something that wasn't like the first book of the series.
