This is a three volume novel (though Cecil assures us he is willing to go on, and has only finished at the whims of his publisher). It follows the life of Cecil Danby, from first glance in a mirror to his mid-thirties. There is a sequel called Cecil, A Peer. This is written in the first person from the point of view of the aged Danby, and thus is historical fiction.
Cecil takes us on his adventures to: Portugal, France, German-speaking France, Hungary, and Italy. We learn the many flavours of women in each of these locations as Cecil repeatedly falls in love.
I enjoyed the third volume least of all, as it became increasingly about Lord Bryon, whom I felt overshadowed the title character.
I think the quoted section below was my favourite part. Cecil has fallen in love with a German woman, but is disgusted to see her eat her native food:
