The unjustifiable depiction of rape is what finally made me put the book down after trawling through racism, homophobia, and misogyny

This book had some really good moments and then it also had some moments where I wanted to grab Nick Cutter by the shoulders and shake him vigorously while saying STOP TRYING TO BE STEPHEN KING. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

This is Nick Cutter's best book, in my opinion. Strange, disturbing, fantastical and absolutely wild, this incredibly original horror book addresses some of the darkest topics in fiction. Cutter pushes his readers to their limits with this story, doing so unapologetically and with little explanation. There are parts of this book that I think about and they still scare me. The epilogue broke my heart and is a MUST READ to complete this story. I'm not sure who I would recommend this book to, but if you are looking for something that will push you well outside your comfort zone, this is the book for you!

Do you like documentaries about Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple? Heaven's Gate? This book does cults so well. That final sermon... oof that was freaky. The dread and fear is palpable throughout the whole book. This book could honestly stand alone with just the parts of it that took place in the 1960s. The story was super gory. like... super gory. I kinda want him to do a short story about the other places they found out there near Little Heaven. The children of this book make the children of the corn look like cutesy day campers. I would've liked him to explain the wishes stuff a little more. That was still pretty ambiguous at the end, but hey, you can't have it all. A terrifying read for sure.
