Why did I wait so long to read August Wilson? This is the first decade in his Pittsburgh cycle, a series of plays chronicling the residents of the Hill District. Moving, poetic, still relevant.

A play exploring what it means when you are free, but not free in day to day reality and the storys and magic and myth you create in such a world just to survive.

The characters are memorable, the plot moves, the emotional stakes are high. I would love to see this performed.

In this first play of a ten play series, it is 1904 in Pittsburgh. African Americans are moving north to find freedom and jobs that are not available in the south.

Thoroughly enjoyed this play, the characters, the plot, the voice. It embodies the struggle, the pain, the joy of a newly freed people.

A beautiful and heart-breaking tale. I hope I get to see the play on the stage someday.
