What all other romantasy novels aspire to be.
I admit I didn't finish this book. My oldest daughter bought it a long time ago and told me she couldn't stand it. I was curious so I began reading. First, I have to say I really do not like the writing style at all. I also felt that the main character seemed rather dim-witted, at least in the beginning, probably because she kept contradicting herself and seemed so detached from everything. It was like she was saying things just for the heck of saying them, but didn't really feel or mean any of it, which included her claiming to love someone after they professed to love her when they were practically strangers. Honestly, none of the characters I read about were very likeable which is why I decided it wasn't worth finishing the book.

I adore this book! McKillip's prose is beautiful and her characters, especially the beasts, are charming.
If it weren’t for home improvements and conference season, I think I could have swallowed this book whole in one night. It is beautifully written and despite its short page count- classic, deep, and rich fantasy. I fell in love with Coren, I wanted to hug Tam, and I wanted to be Sybel, with my powers, animals, and adoptive witch-mother that lives on the mountain with me. Highly recommend to classic fantasy fans- those who love LOTR, The Hobbit, maybe even HP fans can appreciate this one.

I have mixed feelings about this one. I think my expectations were too high. I definitely got stuck on chapter 10 and struggled to reengage for a few days. Sybel is such a unique character that I wanted to love the book. There are times where I did but others where it just seemed so dry. Did the love ever make sense to you? It never tugged at my heart strings. Ter was really the only animal I felt had a personality that made me care for him and his outcome. The villains were good and made sense. I’m just leaving it feeling mid about the experience overall.
