What I liked:
  • Ms. Vitch and Karasuma
  • Nagisa and the introduction of his extremely overbearing mother.
    • This was the best part of this volume. Nagisa trying to decide if he should become an assassin. He's good at it, but is it necessarily the only path his skills will take him?
    • Also him standing up to his mom because she wants him to succeed where she failed (i.e. getting into a good college, getting that job she couldn't)
    • she wants to remove him from Class E because it's holding him back, but Nagisa is who he is currently because Class E has taught him so much.

I loved seeing more of Mr Karasuma in this volume as he goes head to head with the Grim Reaper, and the set-up for the festival is super fun as I love the storylines that have class E and Class A battle it out.

Re-Read: June 2021
Unsurprisingly, I loved this. The conclusion to the Grim Reaper arc definitely holds up as does the story with Nagisa's mom. My one complaint is that I think they forgave Irina too easily, but considering how messed up this class is I guess it makes sense. Plus the forgiveness scene gave us the panel where Irina is behind the puzzle pieces and that's one of my favorite panels in the series. (I also really like the one where she gets the rose!)

Even though it was only 1 episode, I really liked seeing Class E's career goals. I feel like they all actually make sense for the characters. And they were varied! I honestly wish that arc could have gone on longer since I'm so invested in these characters.

The last episode set up the school fair arc which I am SO hyped for. I remember loving that arc and I know some of my favorite minor characters make an appearance. I'll have to read that volume soon!

Original Review
I need to start reading novels again. I'm really enjoying reading this series, and reading manga in general, but I feel like I need to start reading non-graphic novel-esque books soon. Still...I did love this volume, so maybe reading manga 24/7 isn't all that bad.

The first half of this volume concludes the Grim Reaper storyline. I surprisingly enjoyed it! I wasn't expecting to like it, since I find I am often underwhelmed with the conclusions of dramatic scenes in manga. *cough*Death Note*cough* But I thought the author dealt with everything well, and that there was some great character development!
SpoilerAlso, the fight scene between Karasuma and the assassin was really well done!
I really liked Irina's development. I always forget what she's been through, and how young she is! It was a good reminder, and it helped me understand her character and her motivations better. (And I'm happy she finally learned that she doesn't need to wear more revealing clothing to get people to like her!)

The second half of this volume focused on the future of the students of class E, with a special emphasis on Nagisa. I found it really interesting to see what the students wanted to do with their lives. As you may have noticed, I really, really like the character development of this series, so I loved this episode.
SpoilerI found the parts about Nagisa and his mother really interesting as well. Since the beginning of the series, it has been increasingly more clear that Nagisa is naturally talented at assassinations. I think the explanation as to why he is the way he is was a good one. It makes sense that living with someone so volatile would make you extremely intuitive. (And make you look like a girl androgynous I guess.) His mom still kind of scares me, and I have a bad feeling about her...but I'm glad things are okay between the two of them for now. I'm also glad that he decided against becoming an assassin. Even though he is extremely skilled, he seems like he has too many morals to truly be an assassin. Also, the assassins in the series don't seem particularly happy. Irina and Karusama are becoming happier, but that's only because they're doing something other than assassinating. But that's just my opinion.

I have the next 4 volumes out of the library, but hopefully I have some self control and can take a break from this series.

The students’ forgiveness of Irina is truly admirable.

I love the message here of if one wants to help someone who’s in the wrong, it does more good to support them, rather than tear them down.

It’s a message that desperately needs to be advocated more in today’s world.
