Fascinating exploration of community, history, what is forgotten and remembered over time, how the priorities of our ancestors shape our present, and how powerful ideology can be. It packs quite a lot into a small space, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. This was my first Adrien Tchaikovsky book, but it definitely will not be my last!

I read and much admired Dogs Of War and was left feeling a little let down by this. It’s a lot of scene setting.

good little novella! im not a novella person, so it probably deserves higher than a 3.5 but for me that's what it gets. definitely a cautionary tale of AI which becomes more and more relevant every day. i think its themes of colonialism were less well explored, but i understand that probably wasn't the goal of this story. a little reminiscent of Octavia Butler in aspects. im looking forward to reading some of Tchaikovsky's longer works, ive only read this one and Elder Race (which interestingly has VERY similar themes haha).
