Would I read it again? I don’t think so

I feel so sad at the end of this

It’s so beautifully written and the imagery is so vivid. I feel for Chiyo with my whole heart.

I kinda like this book and I kinda loath myself for it. The book is thrilling, and I soon found myself fully indulged by it. Yes, the book can be disturbing at some parts, especially those depicting minor/adult (sexual) relationships, but i believe it was the authors full intention to revoke these emotions in the reader. However, once you look closer at the book through a more critical lenses many flaws and a lot of problematic content becomes apparent. A memoir of a geisha is a form of orientalism with a dash of fetishisation and a bitter aftertaste of a female mc written by a male author, aka a lot of objectification. At the end of the day it’s just another inaccurate portrayal of the far east by the west.  Anyone considering reading this book shouldn’t expect historical accuracy or an in-depth analysis of Japanese culture but instead should read the book for what it is: historical FICTION.

Enough time has passed that I forgot the movie. It is super interesting that a dude wrote this book. At times it is super obvious. Especially with talking about losing virginity and women’s bodies. But I was still intrigued and really enjoyed reading the book. I couldn’t put it down. Now I have to go watch the movie again.

I looooved to read this - even though I have some criticism about it too (the “all the rape stories by American soldiers turned out to be untrue and they are so kind instead” sentence for example) - it was so informative about something I had no idea of

Really interesting to read about this time in history, which I don't know much about. Even though nothing 'exciting' happens, it was written well and I found it easy to read. Didn't really know what to expect. I enjoyed most of the book apart from the ending chapters, although not sure what would've made for a better ending...

4.5 stars! Wow this audiobook was fantastic. The narrator was the chef's kiss and was perfect for this novel. The writing and figurative language used were brilliant and elegant. The life of Chiyo was so heartbreaking. To think that Geisha went through all the stuff in the book makes it even sad. I'm glad this book was written to show people what it was like. Chiyo's story, although painful, was interesting to listen to. I enjoyed listening to some parts but other parts were uncomfortable. Although this novel was remarkable, it was very slow in the beginning and hard to get into, but when you did... it's outstanding.
