Exceptional. I've been recommending to many loved ones.
I knew very little about the Irish Troubles, but have of course heard them referenced over the years.
This was so well woven together and fascinating. Non fictions generally take me more time to get through, but after a few pages, I couldn't wait to keep reading this one.
I can't imagine what it would have been like to live in that time and place, or to contend with the ripples for decades afterwards. I thought the paramilitary participants' reflections on their own actions years later were especially compelling.

The authors style of writing results in a very entertaining narrative. Mostly factual but can't help but feel that he takes some creative liberties, such as when he repeatedly claims that Gerry Adams was in the IRA.

Such a well researched book on a dark and frightening time in Ireland’s history. This is not the history we were taught in schools when I was growing up despite this civil war happening on our doorstep. I love his description of ‘narrative non fiction’ - bringing difficult subjects (the Troubles, the opioid crisis) to life with in a compulsive but respectful way, never sensationalising it.
