I wish there was more. This would be a great book series for young reader new to Sci-Fi. I really enjoyed the social intricacies of species learning to interact on an intergalactic stage, though I can understand if others found that aspect of the story a bit boring.

I’m not going to lie this one took me a bit to get into. I don’t know if it was because it’s been awhile since I read the first three books in the series, but this one just dragged in the first 1/2 for me. After the 1/2 way point I really enjoyed it.

Coming of Age, Romance Subplots

“I don’t think most people want to do what’s right. That’s what makes doing the right thing noble. It’s a conscious choice. A hard one. If it were easy, why would we respect it so much?”

What a sendoff to Spensa and Skyward Flight. Brandon Sanderson has given us a finale worthy of all the buildup and growth of these characters and this beautiful, expansive world. It’s incredible to see how much Spensa has grown, and to see how far the characters we’ve become attached to have come. This book gave me everything I loved from previous books, and kept me surprised at several turns—I gasped out loud at least twice. The culmination of Spensa’s arc and the self reflection she has been having in the past installments really does pay off in a beautiful way, too. If you love Spensa and co. like I did, you surely will not be disappointed.

This is a great conclusion to this series! Though it seems like Sanderson will be writing more books set in this world, which seems pretty on par for him. But Spensa's story is concluded in this particular book.

Seeing the character growth from the first book to this book is honestly masterfully done, and though there is definitely a build up to the ending, it is worth the build up. There's so much action packed into that last part of the book that you won't want to put it down until you finish reading it. I know I didn't!

There are so few sci-fi books like this for teens that I'm glad that this series exists. Because I know there are teens that like to read about space battles, too! The random illustrations thrown in here are also fun. And I appreciated the theme that just because an alien species doesn't think or act like humans doesn't mean they aren't intelligent beings. They just have intelligence in a different way.

All in all, this sci-fi series has all the space battles you could want while still hosting a cast of characters you will come to love by the end.
