Viagens.

I enjoyed a lot of this book. Tokarczuk has an enthralling way of unpacking the most ordinary occurrences as complex rituals governed by rules imposed by social taboos, government policy, and human nature. I did think in parts that it got quite waffly and had a lot of extraneous material - which I understand is part of the concept of the book, however, it made it hard to care about reading those parts. I quite liked the concept of 'travel psychology' that Tokarczuk explored through her narrator (or perhaps compiler would be a better word...?), and I liked the conclusions drawn about human values through this lens. Although I agree with the points being made, I did find a lot of the environmental issues commentary a bit bland and less nuanced than the other themes explored in the book and somewhat at odds with the rest of the style. But I enjoyed my thought-provoking and enjoyable meander through this book.

I read this while travelling abroad to attend a family funeral, so it probably resonated more than it usually would have. Regardless, the underling subject matter is familiar to us all, and this book puts it in a perspective that it likely very unique and not often considered, if at all.
