I really loved the blend of personal accounts, cultural commentary, and history within this text. The book follows 3 women (in the US) from months before conception to postpartum, who all attempt to give birth in a birthing center in Oregon. This book documents various experiences from miscarriage, and abortion to unexpected birth plans while also describes the history of medicalizing birth and how insurance (and different states) may or may not cover certain services/settings (especially related to home birth or birthing centers). I loved to be able to hear about three different women's vastly different pregnancy/birth/postpartum experiences and I really loved how statistics and history was blended in. From time to time, it felt like a tad too much history/statistics included, but for the most part I enjoyed their inclusion and it felt like it added additional context to the text.

Helpful to listen to this story of three first time mothers navigating their pregnancies and births. As someone who is pregnant and choosing a hospital birth, I felt it was valuable to learn more about the birth center approach and “ride along” with these three woman and all the decisions they were making throughout their pregnancies, as well as learning what actually happened during their birth experiences. Well-researched, informative, and not pushing birth centers as the only model, but rather a valuable option to give women the power to have options, where possible.

This book was really interesting and engaging! It was a great mix of following three women's stories of their pregnancy while weaving in related context, history, and statistics about all aspects of pregnancy, midwifery, etc. in the US. Admittedly, this isn't a topic I regularly read about, but this book was very engrossing and accessible and I learned so much!
