my god...where do i even start. i absolutely adored this book. like, oh my god. jack hawthorne <333 both him & rose stole my heart. i loved the alternating perspectives, especially because it was done so well & it wasn't like one chapter her, then him. i won't lie the first chapter i was so confused but then my questions were answered later. this book has rejuvenated my skin & made me believe in love again. i love you jack. i need him expeditiously. also i love that rose is a strong lead like i love her she's a girl boss & jack is so supportive of that w/o being a condescending jerk. like he's perfect. this has got to be the healthiest fake relationship/marriage to real lovers i have ever read. i just. i cried. i will hold this book close to my heart forever.

After losing her uncle and her fiance breaking up with her, Rose is about to lose everything she has worked for. She was about to open a coffee shop in a building that was owned by her uncle, but her dream is over before it began. Her uncle's will states that the building will go to Rose's husband, but Rose isn't married so now the building will go to her awful cousin. Enter Jack. Jack is a lawyer at the firm who represents her uncle. He proposes that they get married that way he will get the building and she can still open her shop.

Rose is a ball of sunshine. She is independent, hardworking, and incredibly driven. She has never had anyone to rely on and has always had to work for everything she has. Jack is grumpy and closed off. Due to his guilt, he tries to avoid developing feelings for Rose, but
as he spends more time with her and then when she gets sick, he realizes how strong his feelings are for her. He decides that lying to her and withholding the truth behind their marriage is the best route.

I was actually able to predict the twist pretty early on.
Jack had met Rose at a party a year earlier and was completely taken with her. Unfortunately for him, she was engaged. Jack had his assistant do a deep dive on her life and found out that her fiance was a compete scammer. After her uncle's death, Jack paid her fiance to break up with her and disappear. He plays this off as him "looking out for her", but he didn't even know her. It is giving stalker vibes. He then proposes the marriage deal to "help" her secure the building for her shop. He never tells her the truth and his real motivations. He only admits what he did when Rose's ex tells her everything.

I get that Rose loves him and what he did helped her in the long run, but it's also very creepy. Basically stalking was the foundation of their relationship. Which according to her friend, was actually sweet and endearing? Then after like a week, she just forgives him! He never apologizes and there is hardly any grovelling. He barley fights for her, he just stands outside her cafe for a few nights and then shows up with divorce papers. Yes he changes thought their relationship, but that doesn't absolve his behaviour at the start of their relationship!

Tropes: grumpy/sunshine, marriage of convenience, slow burn, he falls first

Ughhh, I'm so torn on this.

There were times when I thought I would rate this atleast 4.5 ⭐. The beginning was a bit slow but Rose & Jack were just perfect for the fake-dating trope, I really fell in love with them and their story.

But a plot twist at the end really changed my rating. Of course, every romance has its drama  but this one just didn't feel romantic at all, much more stalker-y. There were also some consent issues during the sex scenes which were probably meant to seem sexy but just made it feel too dub-con for me.

Really wish I could've rated this higher!

I think I did enjoy this book. It constantly goes between I did enjoy this book, or that it was disappointing. But I think overall it was good. I love marriage of convenience storylines as one of my favourite fanfictions have this storyline, so I did go into this book really excited. It started off slightly weird and cringy and I didn’t really like any of the characters, but that soon changed. It was a very slow urn with lots of tension, and his motives were soon revealed. I think that Rose was a nice character, and I did like her, however, she wouldn’t be my favourite book girl by far. Jack, as the love interest was also nice. I loved all the scenes with them together but he wouldn’t be my favourite book boyfriend either. The way they were together was perfect for them but I don’t think it would be good for me, which I like seeing and imagining it is me. There was only particular scene with Rose in the hospital that he annoyed the crap out of me when he made her feel bad for being scared that I started to dislike him. But I guess he was alright in the end. It was again, good for Rose, but I wouldn’t take that shit. I loved how there was the taking care of her trope, but I did think the illness and leaking was a bit weird as I have never seen at before. It was weird but not too big of a deal overall. I loved all the tropes with the marriage, slow burn, grumpy sunshine and guy falls first and the coffee shop storyline and scenes with it. It seemed really perfect. But the conflict at the end ruined it. Jack had a secret for his motives which he hid from rose, and was obvious it would come out eventually. When it did come out, it wasn’t as excited as I wanted it to be. It was revealed great, but didn’t nearly play out or last long enough as I would like. I wished it was longer and more dramatic. I am also torn between whether I think his motives and ideas behind the marriage were really sweet and romantic, or creepy and stalkery. I’m not sure if I did like that storyline, compared to other possible ones, but it’s alright. Overall, the book was alright. It had t’s good and bad but I am happy I read it.
“‘I don’t have a home to go back to anymore Rose.’ I stopped, but didn’t look at him. ‘You’re my home,’ he finished.’
“She was the only one for me; it was as simple as that. I could be without Rose. I could spend a lifetime without ever talking to her again and I would live - miserably, but I would live, as long as I knew she was happier. Life always moved on whether you chose to move along with it or stay put and let it happen all around you, but I didn’t want to do it without her.”
