i like the way that this is done, but i don’t necessary think any of it is particularly innovative or new. the topics of this speculative non-fiction are well trodden ground and i’m not sure this author brought a new perspective to the white european sapphic scene of the late 1800’s, early 1900’s.

This is clearly a very scholarly work, but the scholarly aspect seems to rob it of any passion the women felt for their work or each other.

I think the mixing of tones is done really well in this book. It can go from funny to tragic, or from sweet to enraging, in a few lines, and it's done so expertly that you don't even question it. It's hard to pull that off.

I think the gradual introduction of new figures was great too, because it helped to immerse me in the story rather than seeming like a history textbook and throwing a ton of information at me. Sometimes women were dropped and not mentioned for a while, like Anna Kuliscioff
- who we hear about having died near the end of the book -
and that didn't work so well, but it did help to keep things smooth. Also the narrative, whenever it seemed like it would get repetitive or that there wasn't much left to say, actually went somewhere unexpected, and I appreciated that.

Sometimes the writing is repetitive, but it works here. I didn't give it five stars because I didn't always feel like picking it up to read it, meaning that I had a few days where I wasn't reading, but that was mainly during parts where the story was slowing down slightly and I always enjoyed it when I did pick it up.
