moved too slowly - couldn't get into it

Schwartz has a dark sense of humour. Which I guess you need writing a history of women.

“Perhaps there was a new market in boring stories about women, they remarked, or perhaps the women who read such stories found them of some unfathomable interest.”

I found her book of fathomable interest.

These women in love with each other speak to one another like you’d hope all companions and lovers would except that it is very particular they they are women. It feels like only women could say these things:

“You are a violent luminous wave” p28

It’s a parade of women, often a sad, angry, frustrated, eager and enchanting parade who pushed for who we are able to be today.

But, sometimes I got lost and confused. Too many women, the sub-headings of the vignettes confusing me more. Time skips back and forth. Some pages just slipped by and I didn’t know what had been on them and I didn’t go back to find out.

It is a beautiful book though. Sometimes so powerful it feels like a shove. It felt important. And I’m grateful to now know of more of these women.

This book sits at a 3.75 for me. I had trouble settling in, but once I could keep track of the characters and felt comfortable with the format I enjoyed it. I typically prefer books with strong, deep character development, and the author either assumes that the reader is knowledgeable about all of the players already or that their individual lives aren't relevant to the collective (I suspect it's a bit of both.)

Regardless, the repetition of themes drives home the challenges and pain that women have suffered over generations, and how each introduction of improvement to modern society has either left them out of the conversation or has spoon-fed them participation. There is plenty of joy to be found in the narrative, though, and it's a testimony to women--particularly lesbian, queer, and transgender women--that they have always made space for themselves in a world that wants to crowd them out.
