In some ways I loved this book - beautiful language, archly funny, feminist, unusual - but there honestly wasn’t enough plot for me and I didn’t know enough about the characters (actual feminist authors and artists), which maybe would have helped? It felt quite a bit too long and I expect I won’t remember anything about it.

Really a 3.5

I’m grateful for all the information this novel has given to me. A very unique interpretation of biography and fiction. There are so many important woman, sapphic or not, that are unsung heroes of the Arts. I’m glad Schwartz is doing her part to give them a voice. That being said, it’s incredibly Eurocentric with the occasional American. However, I’m sure that is due to literature historically smothering non-white authors and let alone women of colour.

Nevertheless, I’m appreciative of the sapphics of the past and all their efforts to give women a better future than they had lived.

Reading this was a pleasure. Historically accurate and haunting. A pointed poetic synthesis of feminist strength.

While overall not bad, the primary focus was on very privileged white women, and it was lacking intersectionality.

The fragmented style was both an interesting change and an obstacle for me. It kept me engaged but also made it harder to follow.

Reading this felt like listening to music in another language. It was pretty, and I don't even doubt that some people would love this, just not me. I found it difficult to follow and understand. Or I could follow it and understand it, but definitely not for as long as this book is.
