So the cover is very misleading because Gron is not human- as the cover suggests. A cover that accurately portrays one or more of the characters, or the plot if it has no characters on the cover, is important. It is the first thing people see. It also would be a good idea for the author to note that this turns into a reverse harem, a genre I do not enjoy. I have to wonder how they can have any kind of relationship when they cannot communicate. Especially once on his planet.

Plus sides. The characters were interesting.

Can I just say that the cover is entirely misleading and inaccurate? Gron is an alien, covered in fur, and looks sorta like a caveman. That's a human man on the cover. False advertising. But a pretty good story, nonetheless. Overall: 3.5 rounded up.

Now see? The last book I read, The Scorpion's Mate, was lacking everything this book contained, and Gron and Ruth couldn't even understand each other's language! I believed their relationship more. I need something other than just lust. Something more than just physical and forced involuntary reactions because of pheromones. Gron and Ruth had a build up of emotions and feelings. It was somewhat believable, as believable as an alien and human getting to know each other in a prison cell, and I was intrigued.

I really liked Gron. His species is matriarchal, which is a refreshing take on an alien species. So far, I've only ever seen alpha alien males. This species, the Gandry, lets the female choose who to mate and reproduce with, while the males are there to ultimately follow their lead and desires. God, this was so refreshing. With aliens, there are bound to be different and various cultures and norms, so I'm surprised having alpha females isn't as prevalent in the alien romance genre. But of course, we readers generally enjoy our alpha males, so I get it, but this was a great story decision, imo. Gron was very attentive, gentle, considerate, willing to learn and please, and essentially a really good lover and man. Sure, there was the protectiveness and need to take care of his female/mate, but it was sweet, believable, and understandable, especially with their circumstances. Now, I like me an alpha male, for the most part, but this alien was delicious in his characterization and behavior. He's part of a growing species, so has caveman similarities, but he's intelligent, with a mind of his own.

The Gandry species was interesting, too, other than the matriarchal aspect. The way mates are chosen, the social rules, and the behaviors of males and females were fascinating. I'm excited for more of the society in the second book.

The plot moved well and I was intrigued as to why Gron and Ruth were taken in the first place. It was a satisfying ending.
The worldbuilding wasn't as intricate, but the direction and choices made in the story made it almost impossible to have a detailed look in the universe beyond a prison cell and an unfamiliar forest.

It might have been a little too convenient in the end, Gron and Ruth might have moved on each other a little too fast, and the lack of understanding each other became a little tedious, but I was entertained. It wasn't the best alien romance I've ever read, but it was absolutely a solid addition.

Would I reread this book? No, but that's okay.
Would I recommend this book? I think it's definitely a solid alien romance, so yes.
Was I entertained? Yes! It kept be engaged and I really enjoyed the characters.

Happy reading, Goodreads fiends.

I've never read an alien book before. I don't even like alien movies. It's just not my thing.

However I did enjoy reading Transcendence by Shay Savage and this book kind of reminds me of that. So it was better than I thought, even the alien elements didn't feel as bad.
