An amazing story of a crew that got ship wrecked in the Pacific in 1865. A must read! (Listened via Scribd)

Interesting account of survivors of a shipwreck, with the one man being a true MacGuyver-like individual who did many amazing things with the limited supplies. The author obviously greatly researched this, and even points out the inconsistencies in the 2 main published accounts and includes why she thinks this exist. I will probably pick up some of her other books.

Fascinating book on the wreck of the Grafton on the Auckland Islands in the 1860s--and what the 5 survivors did in the following 20 months. Druett also looked at the survivors of the Invercauld, who wrecked on another part of the island group after the Grafton, but the survivors were rescued before the Grafton survivors' self-rescue.

Druett's final chapter, on sources, is also very interesting. She had a lot to work with--various journals and published accounts, newspapers, and various records as she attempted to follow the survivors' lives after rescue. She also looked at the Auckland group itself--now a World Heritage site.

Well written and interesting--full of ingenuity and cooperation, with the interesting juxtaposition of the Grafton and Invercauld survivor groups.

while i enjoyed the story and the characters, i found the authors style of writing tedious. i understand the urge to explain the scientific and technical aspect of the real-world events, but i thought that some of the explanations were overdone and interrupted the narrative flow. additionally, there were times when the transitions were confusing and abrupt, further interrupting the flow of the story.

Good, but I wish it had gotten to the second shipwreck a little earlier. Also goes on a bit long after. Some of what happens to the former castaways after they return is interesting and some of it isn't.

I am in awe of these people and feel the sudden need to learn *any* survival skills.

This was interesting. But there was so. much. clubbing of seals. I know they had to eat seals to survive, but sheesh, did all the seal deaths have to be documented?
