Repeated flashbacks ending with "[x] wondered how long he'd been standing there, lost in memories". Letters written in a font nearly impossible to read easily over a hasty lunch. Women get together to have "girl time" where they end up discussing ... boys! Attempts towards historical accuracy does not include anything gay at all!!
Utterly delightful in all aspects. Loved it.

Before Captain Jack Sparrow became the legendary pirate, he was an honest merchant working for the East India Trading Company. (Well, before he was an honest merchant, he was a pirate, but thanks to a few false friends and a tiny bit of breaking the pirate code, he had to leave the dishonest life of piracy for safer shores). There, he meets one Cutler Beckett, the director of West Africa for the EITC, with whom he shares an interest: ancient treasure. Beckett has a simple request: that Jack find the lost island of Kerma, which contains the ancient civilization of Zerzura and her treasures. And easy enough job for one as accustomed to digging up ancient, lost treasure as Jack, but he must decide if it's worth Beckett's price.
I enjoyed the first half of his book a lot, but it got bogged down by a lot of factors. There was too much back story that ultimately didn't feel necessary to the climax or plot. It was very uneven. The past was built up and fleshed out, but once they finally started looking for the island, everything went very fast and felt unsatisfying.
My other problem with it is that Jack Sparrow just isn't very interesting as a central protagonist. This story is strongest when it focused on someone else (like Ayisha and Beckett) with Jack being viewed through their eyes. This book had a hard job getting Jack's voice to be realistic as a precursor to what he will become, and I think at times it succeeded brilliantly, but non-mad Jack was not very interesting.
I wish the book had been shorter, more succinct, and less epic in its scope.

if you are even a little bit pirates of the caribbean fan, you NEED to read this.
it’s one of the best prequels I’ve ever read (and I’m not just saying that because jack sparrow is my husband okay). it’s super well written & answers so many questions that the films never did about jack, barbossa, beckett and davy jones. the author totally understood all of the characters’ voices and I could cry every time I read this.
disney - please make this into a film thank you.
5/5 stars :’)

It was an understatement to say that I was excited to discover that there was an adult novel that involved the “Pirates of the Caribbean” Universe. I “stepped on board” this book shortly after reading “On Stranger Tides” by Tim Powers, and I can say that where Tim Powers failed in his book, was passed with flying colors in this one. In this book you go on an adventure of infinite levels that bring to mind the thrills of Indiana Jones’ treasure seeking and the romantic view of the sea that the Pirates movies give you. This was a swashbuckling adventure that I believe is my new favorite nautical novel and on my “favorites” shelves in general. I loved the emotion and the ambiance created in each environment in the book. If you are lover of adventure, and specifically of POTC, you HAVE to read this! I wish I could convince everyone to read it. Brilliant book! I know I will be re-reading this over and over again. I only hope that it can be made into an animated adventure or something. Read this and find out Jack’s history of some of his beloved trinkets he wears, his swagger, and his true love: The Black Pearl. There is plenty to be found deep in the pages of this intriguing adventure novel. It even grants more depth to the existing movies. Now start reading it, you good for nothing sons and daughters of bilge rats, before I have you all flogged without mercy!!
