Maggie O’Farrell does it again for me. I love Hamnet for an incredibly rich life dreamed up for lives mostly forgotten by history. We know they existed but how much else? Again with The Marriage Portrait, O’Farrell quietly, slowly develops a full existence for these names. In other instances, I would probably find her very thorough detailing tedious, but when she does it, I just really enjoy it. I was incredibly grateful to her for the ending.
