Based on the description, and some reviews, I was expecting to really love this, but was mostly underwhelmed by it. This was like the literature equivalent of imagining an outfit in your head that would look great, but then you put it on and kind of hate it. I agree with others who said the best parts of the book revolved around Sils. There were some really beautiful and poignant lines here and there, but many parts were boring, and the characters felt underdeveloped and hard to connect with. I loved a lot of the themes, I just wish they had been explored better/deeper.

one of the topics i find myself writing about constantly and thinking about is childhood and, specifically, girlhood. this book was such a precise and haunting snapshot into that and i loved it so much. i found myself writing down so so many quotes from it. seriously some of the best writing i have ever read.

the back section did drag on for me a little bit, but also i got so busy between reading the first half and the last half that it's hard to tell if that was a user error or a fault of the book. i'm giving it 5 stars, but it was probably more like 4.5, but i'm feeling generous because the writing was so top tier for me.

Really enjoyed. Beautifully written without being pretentious and a lovely look at female friendship as one gets older. Feels like going back to your hometown in winter when everything is gray concrete. A bit sad.

I didn't get certain details until reading the synopsis provided here. Good visual writing, but it seemed unfinished by the end.

A bunch of familiar coming-of-age tropes, but beautifully, beautifully rendered, with enough humor and darkness to make the poignancy tart and stinging instead of sickly sweet.
