This book was hard to read. My heart felt heavy with all the suffering. So much suffering. Even though it was hard to hear, it was a story worth listening to. A story that needed to be told. This book demonstrates the power of love and hope.

When I first read [b:Sarah's Key|556602|Sarah's Key|Tatiana de Rosnay|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1317064109s/556602.jpg|2523229], I was blown away by events that occured that I was NEVER aware of. This story was very much like that. Growing up in a suburban bubble, just outside of Los Angeles in sunny Southern California, history such as this really didn't seem to be taught. I was sadly fascinated by the story, which was told through the eyes of Lina, a 15 year old Lithuanian who is taken from her home and deported in 1941 along with her brother and her mother. Her father has been separated, and you can tell through the narration that he was very close to her, which just breaks your heart. The story leads you quickly through Eastern Europe and then into Siberia, which can only be described as Arctic Hell.

Lina relies on artwork to document her experience. She communicates by drawiing faces and events to retell her experiences. She risks everything to try and send messages to her father. Much attention is paid to the cryptic messages that the prisoners are using to communicate with those from home.

The cruelties that await her on the trains, in the camps...it's horrendous. I can't even imagine the suffering that these people went through. To think that there were survivors is astounding, truly astounding.

As an educator, this would be an amazing addition to a history curriculum for middle school and up. It's brutal and harsh, but yet weaves emotion and family and tradition throughout. I was motivated to look up Munch (the artist) as well as the path that Lina and her family take. It is billed as a YA book, but don't let that fool you. It's a remarkable read.

Adorei todas as personagens, todas as cenas, todas as descrições.
