This one was a tough read. Big trigger warnings as Ellie battles with an eating disorder in this book. My issue was that it doesn’t feel like JW knows a great deal about anorexia and bulimia. That being said, we are seeing everything through the eyes of a thirteen year old girl so it’s unsurprising that it’s a very juvenile approach to such a serious issue.

I think I must’ve blocked this book out of my memory because I didn’t remember any of this happening at all in the Girls series.

Totally get what JW was trying to do with this one, but I don’t think the execution of such a serious topic was that great.

the jacqueline wilson effect is not realising quite how dark a story goes until you're rereading it as a fully fledged adult

3.5 stars. A lot heavier on the ED than I remember. It’s strange reading through the lens of a grown up and feeling more emotionally affected than when I first read it at 13. I forgot just how dark Jacqueline Wilson’s books can be.
