I really struggled with this one; maybe my hopes were too high. The world building (if thats the right term for societal function) was rather lacking because there was a lot of stuff that wasn't flushed out well enough and left me scratching my head, especially early on. The writing style just didn't do it for me and made it difficult to read. For a bit, I thought maybe my own trauma/abuse was playing a part in my aversion to continue reading but I have read other books with domestic violence, controlling, manipulating behaviors, and whatnot and didn't have this issue. It aimed high and just fell short for me.

Love the premise of this; smart and biting. And I really enjoyed Rashad’s use of language. But, for whatever reason, it just didn’t add up to great storytelling for me. Many of the characters felt a little thin and surface-y (I think intentionally in several cases) and the pacing of the split timelines didn’t always work for me.
Happy I read this, and will definitely check out future titles from the author, but just didn’t love it as much as I wanted to.
