Second time Iv tried to engage with this book found it dead ended and not at all engaging the island of sea women is a far superior book, in my opinion. Just not for me

We will never truly know our parents. The first quarter or so was a bit slow, but I really came to enjoy it towards the end. The characters all felt very real and the time skips that occurred provided interesting vignettes that really emphasized the sacrifices parents make for their children, and the children that will never be able to realize it, even when they make their own sacrifices for their own children. The only part that I didn't like was some times it felt a bit too much like a carousel of secondary characters were filtering through the story, to a point where a few times I had to stop and look back through the book to remind myself of the identity of the secondary characters.

I suspect the first half of the book was a labor of love for the author. The second half lost some heart as I anxiously waited for the other shoe to drop.
