My feelings on this book depends on whether this is an autobiography or a work of fiction as the author has claimed. As a work of fiction, I thought it illustrated very well the collective denial by family members of a traumatic event and the subsequent loneliness and isolation the victim feels with this 'taking of sides' and suppression of voice. Bergljot chooses to have minimal contact with her family until the contents of her parent's will forces her to re-engage with them

This is the second book I have read by Vigdis Hjorth. It is amazing. Very sad and contemplative. It is a complex portait of a woman dealing with childhood trauma and a family that refuses to acknowledge it.
