12/2019 update: I finally got my SO to start reading the first of these as I picked up the seventh, but I was so put out at not remembering the context for the bits he was laughing at that I ended up joining him for the 2nd through the 6th. A great way to spend a chilly week in November.
------
These novellas don't have the same kind of resonance as Paladin of Souls (my favorite of hers) but you can tell she had fun writing them and I'm having a great time devouring them.

I enjoy the subtle humor of these stories, the character of Pen and his demon, Desdemona "Des". They make a great match and these are interesting stories if a bit heavy. The world and 5 gods and all the accompanying minutiae is a bit much for the casual SF reader but I love the dynamic happening between Pen and pretty much anyone her comes in contact with.

This story comes in 4 years after the previous one and we see how Pen has matured and is easy with Des. It is based on shaman magic and beast building- I don't know- all this is above my pay grade but I like it!

Looking forward to more Inglis and Oswyl as reluctant groupies of Pen :)

This was passably enjoyable! It was a lot of fun to get to see Penric and Desdemona from other character’s perspectives this time around. That said, there were a few moments that honestly felt like computer RPG dialogue — not because the dialogue itself was badly written, but because the characters were wandering around systematically questioning people in a similar way, hah.

A worthy sequel to Penric’s Demon, though I wish we had seen more interactions with Desdemona. This novella is a simple mystery, hence the three stars, but I have yet to be disappointed in a Chalion book so I thoroughly enjoyed my time reading it. As always I love any scene that involves one of the Five Gods.

'Penric and the Shaman' by Lois McMaster Bujold is the second Penric novella in the same universe as The World of the Five Gods.

When we last left Penric, he was inhabited by a demon which was actually multiple women living in his body. This time around that seems to be well in hand, and Penric is in the role of a court sorceror for the Princess-Archdivine. He is sent out to find a shaman named Inglis who is on the run.

I enjoyed the character of Desdemona so much that I was hoping for more of her in this book. She is present, but just not as present. Still, the writing is as solid as it ever is with Lois McMaster Bujold. She can write characters that the reader can really care about, and that is true here as well.

I found this story harder to follow - although I am so interested in the world of this story
