La lecture est facile mais peu plaisante. Les morales sont pour certaines assez ignobles : La Belle au bois dormant vente les mérites de la virginté et La Barbe-Bleue invite à se méfier de l'anormal.

Those were.... well... boring. I may have read a bad translation, but even then, these were simply too happily ever after and saccharine for me (obviously, Disney opted to use these as a source, rather than other grittier versions). The Grimm versions of many of these tales are MUCH better, as they aren't always happily ever after and more engaging in their style. Perrault certainly gets all the points for being a prominent fairy tale teller, but the way these were written/translated was just, ugh.

It's interesting to see the differences between how the fairy tales were written by Perrault and how they've filtered down into our collective consciousness now. Sleeping Beauty has an entire second act that's usually done away with (for good reason, I suppose).

An amazing book filled with the "usual" fairy tales. But the Gustave Dore illustrations make it totally worth the purchase. The print is a little big though. But I suppose that was done because the Dore illustrations are a full page each. Though the stories are familiar, and okay for children, I doubt they'd enjoy the Dore wood cuttings. The are, of course, without color and can be kind of creepy. Which is why I like them.

I absolutely love these fairy tales!
Brutal but actually honest I read them when I was a teenager and couldn't stop revisiting it and reading the book again!
