I never write reviews but THIS BOOK! Is too good not to. The way this is written, the new and old characters are just the best. I love the storyline. THE PLOT TWIST! Is insane and amazingly written. I am overwhelmed in the best way. I love this book, it’s even better than the first in my opinion. I’m praying that there are many more Nikki books to come and many more adventures to go on with her because I could speed read these books all day! Definitely one of my favourite reads.

One Got Away by S.A. Lelchuk is a fast-paced mystery featuring a strong woman lead.  Although this newest release is the second installment in the Nikki Griffin series, it can be read as a standalone.

Nikki Griffin co-owns a prosperous bookstore in Berkeley, CA. She is also a private detective with a unique sense of justice. Her latest case appears to be a straightforward investigation, but Nikki is in for a surprise when it takes a dark turn. Not one to back off from uncovering the truth, she convinces another member of the very wealthy Johannessen family it is in their best interest to keep her on the payroll. Nikki has no idea where her quest for the truth is going to take her, but she is not going to stop until she has uncovered every secret the Johannessen is trying to keep hidden.

Nikki is intrigued when Martin Johannessen hires her to investigate his octogenarian mother’s latest man toy Dr. Geoffrey Coombs. Martin believes Coombs has taken advantage of dear old mom since she has given him quite a bit of money. As soon as Nikki begins looking into Coombs, he takes off. With a little bit of help from an observant twelve-year-old, she locates Coombs and insinuates herself into his evening. But Nikki finds herself in a precarious situation as Coombs turns the tables on her and his recent past catches up with him. Will Nikki unearth the truth about who is targeting the Johannessen family? And more importantly, why?

One Got Away is a multi-layered mystery with a clever storyline. Nikki is a smart and gutsy woman who is more than capable of taking care of herself. The plot is engaging with plenty of action. With a brilliant series of shocking revelations, S.A. Lelchuk brings this riveting mystery to an unexpected, yet completely satisfying, conclusion. I completely enjoyed and highly recommend this second installment in the Nikki Griffin series to fans of the genre.

“One Got Away” is the second in the “Nikki Griffin” series; new readers will immediately be captured by the characters and the action, wondering how they missed the first book. The story is set in central California and reflects the unique geography and culture of the area, but the story is all Nikki from start to finish -- the places she goes, the people she finds, and how she feels about everything.

Nikki owns a bookstore along with Bartleby, the bookstore’s normally social resident feline.  She rides a motorcycle, so she has no trouble finding parking spots where ever she goes. Her “significant other” Ethan is an adjunct professor on a tenure track at Cal. He wants their relationship to grow and progress; Nikki just wants to make it to tomorrow. She tells herself that she really is not ready for a long-term relationship. In truth, she might be fine without Ethan, but she would not be the same; she needs him more than she knows.

Nikki’s current assignment, a simple request for information, nothing illegal had happened,   somehow turns into a very complex, and of course, dangerous situation. She ventures beyond the scope of the original request but is compelled to finish what she started. Readers enthusiastically go along for the wild ride with her.

“One Got Away” is a compelling adventure where everyone has little secrets and everyone is a bit deceitful. The plot is deliberate, focused, and filled with the unexpected right up to the frantic end. I received a review copy of “One Got Away” from S. A. Lelchuk and Flatiron Books. My advice is to plan your reading time carefully, once you start on this journey with Nikki, you will not stop until you reach the last page.

Thanks to Macmillan Audio and Flatiron Books for the complimentary audiobook.

I read book 2 first (this book), but I loved the character of Nikki Griffin so much that I had to go put book 1 on hold at the library immediately!

I love Nikki as a character. She is tough and resolute in her beliefs but soft hearted when warranted.

When Nikki is hired by the elite Johannessen family, she thinks she is just tracking down a conman who targeted a very wealthy elderly woman. But soon she is pulled into a web of secrets and danger that she handles in her smart and tenacious manner. Plus her young sidekick in this one was a stellar secondary character and I hope he shows up in book 3 (please tell me there is a book 3!).

This is a fast paced action crime thriller that is a fight between good and bad and sometimes lands in the murky middle. I blazed through this book as I found it wildly entertaining.

Thank you to NetGalley, S.A. Lelchuk and Flatiron Books for the free e-book in exchange for an honest review.

I was hooked on Lelchuk's writing after reading the first Nikki novel; I adore how badass she is and how she fights for those who can't fight for themselves generally. These novels are the perfect length that it feels like it's so short because there is so much that goes on throughout the entirety of the novel. I loved all the plots twists that went right up until the final page and I really enjoyed all the new characters that helped her along the way. Definitely looking forward to the next novel to see what mischief Nikki can get up to.
